Meet the giant tortoises in their natural environment

El Chato Ranch

El Chato is a private ecological reserve located in the upper part of Santa Cruz Island. It is characterized by its green and leafy environment, composed, among others, of scalesia trees, native to the Galapagos Islands. Also endemic to the Galapagos Islands, the giant Galapagos tortoises that give their name to the entire archipelago, periodically cross the El Chato Reserve, in their migration between the coast and the highlands in their courtship and mating process.

El Chato is the natural setting where you can see giant tortoises Chelonoidis porteri, as well as dozens of bird species. You can also see striking volcanic formations, such as lava tunnels. There are trails that can be easily walked. A delicious food and beverage service is available for visitors, where you can enjoy international and typical Ecuadorian cuisine (prior reservation is required for food services).

Due to its location between Puerto Ayora and Baltra Airport, the El Chato Ecological Reserve is a strategic stop upon arrival or departure from the Galapagos Islands.
